ABOUT KRISTIAN

Kristian de Leon is a Brooklyn-based composer and percussionist
who writes colorful, imaginative works that explore the “in-betweens” of Classical music. As a performer, he specializes in an avant-garde, theatrical style that focuses on demonstrating the physical weight of sound in sonic space and the interactions that may come as a result.

Kristian has written for a number of premiere performance artists and ensembles such as JACK Quartet, Transient Canvas, Matt Evans, the NYU Percussion Ensemble and the CSUF Wind Symphony. In addition, he has been commissioned to create new works by groups including Southern California Marimba and other select soloists. As a performer, he has played in several new music chamber ensembles and appeared as a guest artist with groups like the Los Angeles Percussion Quartet.

Kristian is currently living in Brooklyn, NY with his obscenely large house cat, Bagel, pursuing a Master’s Degree in Music Theory and Composition at NYU Steinhardt under Michael Gordon, Shelley Washington, and Robert Honstein. He is also a proud Rustic Percussion Artist (on Instagram).

When he is not in writing or in school, Kristian can be found working at a local coffee shop, visiting an art museum, or simply just vibing at home.

After hearing Kristian premiere his first full wind ensemble composition, "State of Alarm," with the California State University, Fullerton Wind Symphony (linked above), I knew I had to immediately ask him to write a piece for saxophone. After discussing our thoughts on saxophone and music, Kristian agreed to compose a new work for the saxophone repertoire which is entitled: new air

FROM KRISTIAN

"I'm dreaming about a work for saxophone and piano accompaniment that will be called "new air" and it will based on taking a pause and living in a moment of beauty. Lots of aleatoric gesture figures interwoven with through composed moments, really inspired by Colin Stetson performance practice and loose neo-tonal harmonies that are simply just pretty. Imagine a piece that really loves to breathe in a more reverberant space to capture depth and width."

PROGRAM NOTE
In our first meeting about this piece, John Hallberg talked greatly about wanting to play something that was “a breath of fresh air.” This piece aims to capture exactly that - the feeling of taking in great breath of crisp and refreshing air at the turn of a new season; a playfulness that flows and whirls with its own lofty ideals.
